Summer is the time of year when many Americans head out on vacation. It doesn't matter if you're heading out on a road-trip or a lengthy airplane ride, staying comfortable is key. Failing to take care of yourself while away can put a real damper on your vacation and quickly transform an enjoyable and relaxing scenario into an unpleasant experience. Before you head out on vacation this summer, make sure you know how to keep yourself comfortable.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is often the furthest thing from your mind when taking a road trip in order to eliminate the need for frequent bathroom stops. In your quest to minimize these stops, don't get dehydrated. Dehydration can cause the onset of muscle spasms.

It's essential to keep water circulating around your body. When there is a lack of fluid around your nerves, this can cause them to involuntarily contract or spasm. This isn't just painful, but it can also limit blood flow throughout the body, which is dangerous. Keep a bottle of water handy to keep hydrated.

Pack Lightly

Don't pack like you're never coming back home again - avoid over packing. On an extended trip this is sometimes easier said than done, but it's an important effort to make to minimize injury. When most people travel, especially in an airport, they are in a rush. When you pair this with a very heavy bag, the chance of a muscle pull or tear is elevated.

Not only is the heavy bag a risk factor, but your swift movement will also likely result in you lifting the bag incorrectly. The best way to avoid this is to pack as lightly as possible and to ensure the weight inside the bag is evenly distributed.

Keep It Moving

One of the best ways to prevent discomfort is to stay active. Standing up and stretching can prevent the discomfort that is typically associated with stiffness. When you stay in the same position for a long time, this reduces blood circulation, which prevents it from flowing through your extremities as necessary, resulting in the pain you feel.

When on a lengthy plane ride, take a few moments to get up a stretch. The same is true when riding in a car for an extended period. In addition to minimizing pain, frequent stretching can also help lower the risk of a blood clot when traveling by air. Look for a chiropractic care center if you find that your body needs a little bit of relaxation.

Don't let travel wear you down. Make sure you are protecting yourself for the most enjoyable experience while on vacation.
